102 Beecher Sean. The Story of Cork.
CORK The Mercier Press. 1971 853422494 Paperback Used Acceptable
123pp , white pictoral covers, slightly grubby, pages lightly browned, crease across top corner of front cover, internally some odd foxing. This book has no pretentions to be a 'Definitive' history of the city. It is the story of a city, albeit a special city. It is an attempt to draw a profile of Cork. Cork like most Irish towns and cities just grew up. It was not planned, in fact one might say that it was this very spontaneity which has contributed more than anything else to the formation of its character, a character which would prompt Desmond MacNamara in The New Statesman to call it 'a city of tattered grace, probably the most seductive and loquacious in Western Europe'. Sean Beecher has tried to reflect the personality of Cork people by showing how, they and the countless generations of Cork inhabitants have created the city.

"As the second year of her reign drew to a close, Elizabeth's Ireland was a possession still largely outside the Tudor order, a land always to be reformed tomorrow, never today. To the Queen, the island was a wilderness. She preferred to ignore it. England faced expensive choices elsewhere, and neglect, though lacking majesty, was a servicable alternative, not without benefit to both countries. But in the autumn of 1579 the Irish rebelled and thrust themselves into the forefront of a grave international crisis, cancelling the blessings of neglect." - from the Twilight Lords.
